There are scenes and developments in Book …moreThey are separate but you can see some of the bones of what would become Southern Reach every now and then. There are scenes and developments in Book 2 that are very reminiscent of the Crawler for me. It's not the same thing, but you can see him playing with ideas he would later incorporate into Area X (lenses that open the other worlds, a threat that might not be sentient or terribly concerned about us, expeditions into the underground, etc). It's worth seeing him play with these ideas in an entirely different setting (the city of Ambergris is entirely fictional and kinda vaguely Victorian / early 20th century London or New York). (less)
