It helps to read the first one as well, but you could probably get through book 2 well enough without it. I personally liked the second book better.(less)

Is this intended to be a trilogy?

ella ☆ any pronouns I do not believe so, however, I think this would fit nicely as a trilogy, from what I have heard on it.
