So far I'm rather surprised how good Scarlet is, I didn't think Mr. Barker could 'get back to it' as it were, like Stephen King I thought Barker was done with Horror... A shame since he's one of the few that will ever be good enough in the genre... I was wrong! His new book is a return to his form, maybe it's a good thing that he's been away for 20 years?

The Hellbound Heart was a standalone story originally published as part of an anthology which Barker himself adapted for the screen following earlier 'adaptations' of his work by others. Every film thereafter is the work of others - not Barker - and bear no relation to his work(s).

As per Dustin's comment, Harry D'Amour appears in several of Barker's other stories - The Last Illusion, in Books of Blood Vol. 6 (UK) / Cabal (US); Lost Souls, another short story published in an anthology; and Everville, the second book of the (currently unfinished) Art Trilogy. Norma Paine also appears in at least one of these stories.(less)

Is it essential to have read other Harry D'Amour stories beforehand or can I go straight into this one?

May Panayi IMHO you will lose out a bit by not getting to know the character first, but it will read ok.

Who wrote this book? Because aside from perhaps the first chapter, there's no way it was Barker.
