What did others who read this, think about how the murderer was caught? I thought it was unfair to the reader. Anyone else?

The villain was really the only possible suspect. Anybody else would either have been unbelievable, have <spoiler>ruined the historical-novel situation</spoiler>, or would have had to be dragged in from beyond the left-field wall, i.e., never having been seen before the climax.

And the method of the reveal was a clever surprise, in my estimation.

In any case, this was not meant to be a classic "fair-play" offering (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.ph...), nor did it seem to be.(less)
