I'm confused about Mia's father's views and motivations. He chastises Mia for calling the people on the planets "mudeaters" but ultimately he is the one who ends up considering them disposable and less-than. He makes sure Mia's tutor is Mr. Mbele even though he vehemently disagrees with him. Mia's views gradual shift towards that of Mr. Mbele which eventually creates a rift between her and her father. Why?

After finishing the book I still don't understand the purpose of Trial. The Ship seems to have population control solved with strict regulations and none of the skills that kids obtain for Trial seem to be of any use for life on the Ship. After Trial is over it doesn't appear that the majority of the Ship's inhabitants ever step foot on a planet again. So why risk the lives of every single child on the Ship?

I really, really liked this book when it first came out. And I need to re-read it. That was a long time ago. But I don't care for audio books, and my old paperback got given away when I moved into senior living. So I lied when I said I have the audio book. I want an e-book of it but can't find it. Does anybody know when or where I can get it in ebook format?
