I just got this book today at my local thrift store, not knowing it was part of a series. Is it essential to read them in order (LOTR style), or are they more standalone type stories (where the universe is the same and everything, but each book focuses on different characters, and you don't have to read them in order, to be able to enjoy them)?

There is plenty of worldbuilding and I didn't feel like I was missing anything when I read it. I read it nearly ten years ago when I was in high school. I really need to get cracking on checking out the other books but if you still have this book then I can assure you that you can dive right in and read it.(less)
