He is under a lot of pressure to solve the case (often there is a time element) + he has a terrible decease, Parkinson's and (*SPOILER ALERT*) he is seperated from his wife for a long time, with plans of divorce. There's some slightly disturbing content, but apart from that, I'd just mention that the protagonist is a middleaged man who has Parkinson's decease + is an expert psychologist solving crimes that are a bit out of the ordinary. There's a whole series about Joe O'Loughlin.
I was about 30 when I read it and I loved it. Has a real surprise at the end.
