Is the english-translated version of this book hard to read for a non-native speaker? Or is it written in easy to understand/practical english? I got interested in the premise of the book but as it is a 1800s work I'm afraid I might have to stick to a dictionary for as long as I'm reading it, which would be a rather unpleasant experience.

But aside from that, I found the book almost unreadable as it isn't a story -- there's no emotion, no characters you care about enough to follow -- but, instead, a long series of isolated (though very descriptive) scenes. It's an attempt at a history book trying, in vain, to be a story, and lacks any flow or interesting continuity.(less)
