What caused the whale to damage the boat? The abridged version I listened to mentioned the whale's "thrashing" and made reference to its dying, but never explained what had happened.

Speared/injured/whatever this whale and that was why it was thrashing about. (less)

Our book group unanimously hated this book and did not find it worth while. We actually question all the high flying reviews..
We had 16 people at our discussion..almost everyone finished it..several did bail. Those who didn’t bail were hoping for more at the end. I would never recommend this book to a reader friend. Not one person felt it warranted the time to read…and it was a short book by comparison.(less)
