Then for fun, go back and read what others thought and, no worries for spoilers.(less)

I don't think it will help you with a definitive answer, but the personal relationship and the nature of self-delusion have something to do with it, I think.(less)

Definitely he is not that smart, he seems to be the typical academic person, intelligent for so many people but actually really stupid and no skilled in matters of life. I think he was a bad written character that actually served to portrait various ideas of the author in general, but failing to create an interesting character.(less)

In the film, the daughter is old enough to live away from home, so I assume she is a college student, which makes her at least 19 years old. If Susan and Edward separated 20 years earlier, the daughter would have the right age to be Edward's daughter. However, I thought it was quite clear that the last time they saw each other was the day she came back from the abortion clinic, with her new boyfriend. So Susan had the abortion? If yes, she must have conceived again right after, with a man she hardly knew. Albeit not impossible, I find that conjecture very strange. And there is no other reference to the daughter in the film whatsoever. Her existence is meant to be opaque. At long last, I came to the conclusion that the presentation of the daughter was probably just a dream sequence. (less)
