I had the pleasure of reading this book again over the summer and I felt nice re-reading it and remembering the story or picking up on something I missed. I feel that every generation, the hard-boiled PI gets a little better. First there was Candler, then Parker and then Lehane. Anyone else like Parker or Chandler's works?

I guess I was destined to, since my college Theology prof declared my papers read more like Mickey Spillane than Saint Augustine! I never even had read Spillane - I'm just born that way. I was never a pulp reader until I heard some radio classics a few years ago on Sirius, and went wild over the over-the-top similes used on the detective stories. Now I'm hooked. I have not read Parker, but will check him out on your prompting. Thanks, and enjoy!(less)

My best guess is that they thought that the gangbangers were watching for them and not the car and / or that the gangbangers wouldn't chase car thieves. My flimsy hypothesis.(less)
