Why does Philip K. Dick provide a wrong table of contents? Does it reflect another layer of reality to this novel?

My copy of the book --- SF Masterworks --- has occasional markings in the bottom margin of the page saying "M.D---n", where n starts at 1 and goes to 8. I thought at first it was marking the chapters, but that isn't right. Is it just a note to the book assemblers? I kept thinking it would relate somehow to the joke Table of Contents or something.

Wojtek Those must be printing house's markings - "M.D" is just abbreviation of the tittle and the "n" are the numbers of the signatures. I suspect there is eight signatures and each has twenty four pages.
Most of the time they are printed outside pages on a free space of a sheet, but sometimes they print them inside.(less)
