A frustrating character who was not a hero, per se. but thus more human.
The inner voice and the spoken voice, set as they are in Texas, seemed like a very subtle commentary of how all people have complex minds, although they are not always shown to us via speech.
While perhaps not intentional on the part of the author, it speaks to the very human and decidedly Western notion that if people don't speak English they are not very clever...I think we also tend to think that people from the past (100 years ago, 2000 years ago) were not as bright as we are, in general, when, in fact, they most likely were exactly as bright as we are, without benefit of modern education and scientific advances.
I tend to think in words, but I have been told that some people do not, or think in images, and I wonder if this would be the case for the character, who might be capable of great abstract thoughts and ideas without the verbal language skills to express them?
