I picked this up not knowing it was 11th in a series, can I read it without having read the others and still be ok? Not sure if they are pretty much stand alone and just have the same main character or really need to be read in order.

It's going to be in the personal relationships where you might be missing some of the details. Though, the story does do a pretty good job of providing an overview so you shouldn't feel as if you're missing very much.(less)
