Is any one else disturbed by the deep sadomasochistic thread in The Unhewn Throne? I know that adds jeopardy and suspense, but it is so relentless, so unleavened by joy or light or love. As if Meshkent and Balendin ran away with the story . . .

The third book in the series was such a disappointment, the only likable characters were Gwenna and the rest of the wing. Valyn, Adare and Kaden were all either turned into hateful monsters throughout this book or simply made really boring. I almost wish I'd never started reading the series if I knew it would end up this way.(less)
