However, it is line with Marlowe's quirky ethics. Several times throughout the book he refuses to accept payment over and beyond what he thinks he is owed. Therefore, we can conjecture that he thought the pigskin suitcase was far too valuable to accept, even as a gift.

I recommend reading it whether you have or have not read other Marlowe books, and would still recommend it although you did not care much for the movie.

I thought the Altman movie with Eliot Gould was so/so. Moving Marlowe into the 1970s is a big change, which I respect although I didn't agree with altogether. I didn't care for the movie's portrayal of Marlowe as kind of a slob, it detracted from my picture of his character. And all the noir style Chandler readers know and love is replaced wholesale in the movie with 70s style -- and it's all in color, no less. Also, there's some difference in how it all resolves, which I won't detail here.(less)
