Katherine's muteness & behavior was also influenced by her misinterpretation of the Bible stories (eg: feared being eaten by lions if you admitted being a Christian). But what bad thing did Katherine feel she "did?" (page 265 "I did it...It was me, it was me. I didn't mean to." Things started getting better after her "confession."

Shirley Falls is fictional in this book, Amy and Isabelle and The Burgess Boys. But there must be a small town in Northern Maine that it was drawn from. Any ideas?
