It was actually his first published novel, and the two that predate it in terms of the timeline were therefore published afterwards. I just finished it myself, with it being the first I read. No problem.(less)

There was definitely a lot of information that was a little over my head, and I found myself backing up to re-read sections to make sure I understood exactly what was going on and who was who. But the parts I didn't fully understand didn't take away from the overall story. It was fairly easy to differentiate between what was just additional technical information about the countries' military setups or battleship/submarine specs, and what you actually needed to pay attention to in order to stay up with the plot. I'm sure a few re-reads of the book will yield a deeper understanding of exactly what was going on with some of the secondary characters and plots points, but I still very much enjoyed this book and was able to appreciate some of the twists revealed toward the end.(less)

I started reading military thrillers at about the same age (some thrillers by Patrick Robinson, the guy who co-wrote Lone Survivor with Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell). I started reading Clancy two years ago, when I was 14. Be aware of profanity though, there is a lot of that. If you are ok with him dealing with profanity and accepting it maturely, then I would say it is ok to read. The violence is not graphic, it is more technical, involving details and technology.(less)
Ken Fox Just finished reading this again. It has no strong language or sexual situations. It would be fine to read for a 13 year old in my opinion.
