Greig Roselli Yes, I really enjoyed reading this book with my students. It is written for young people, but I used it to teach English Language Learners - most of w…moreYes, I really enjoyed reading this book with my students. It is written for young people, but I used it to teach English Language Learners - most of whom are a lot older than Jean! It was interesting to have my students give their perspectives because they are young Chinese teenagers studying in the United States - it made for a unique conversation and allowed us to talk about cultural differences, how it feels to be in a country that is not your own and the general theme of belonging and what that means. In addition, I liked how the book paints a picture of the historical situation of China during that time - when the country was officially the Republic of China but was divided by in-fighting between local warlords, the emerging Communist party, and the flailing Nationalists. However, students will enjoy the book because we read the story through the eyes of Jean; so, in this way, the book is a classic coming-of-age narrative.
