I am really struggling to read this book because of the footnotes, could I read it and just ignore the footnotes or are they essential to the storyline?

I started out reading every one, but flipping back and forth was giving me whiplash. Sometimes if I think one might have some interesting history or "educational" value, I look at it. I have FMO, so it's hard not to read them, so sometimes I look at them in one big chunk and realize they are just fluff. The real question is WHHHHYYYYYY? Why put so much immaterial stuff in footnotes that could have been in the general text?(less)
