Present tense allows the readers to feel the immediacy of the love story--to get a fuller sense of their passion "in the moment" while reading about their relationship. You want readers to know that what happened "before" their relationship was actually before...therefore those pieces of backstory that are woven throughout the novella are written in past tense.
