Besides character development, there are a lot of events, new characters and key moments in the series in the paperbacks. I'm fairly certain that a lot from the paperbacks is referenced in the hardbacks. It's well worth reading them all anyway. I have seen that the rest were released as Science Fiction Book Club exclusives but I have no idea how easy it is to get a hold of those.(less)

They do introduce characters that show up in this series, however, they're not essential (I haven't read them). That said, there are a lot of novels that occur between the films and the Thrawn trilogy and then in between the Thrawn trilogy and Hand of Thrawn that are very worth reading. I'd highly recommend the Rogue Squadron series. Most Legends novels have a novel timeline you can follow. The Essential Reader's Companion is also a good resource.(less)

However, it's tastefully done and isn't overly graphic. Otherwise, I can't think of any.(less)

However, you might check out Crosscurrent and Riptide by Paul S Kemp as they feature Jaden Korr (the player character from the Jedi Academy game as the main character). For reference and possible spoilers they occur in between Legacy of the Force and Fate of the Jedi and have links to the Lost Tribe of the Sith and some of the Tales of the Jedi comics. However, if you've already read those then these are a fairly stand alone duology.(less)
