Sorry, but what the hell is he now? Detective Constable (DC Smith, as on the books cover), which is near to nothing in the ranks of detectives, as it is the lowest rank. Former DCI (Detective Chief Inspector) or Detective Sergeant? I would be grateful for enlightment. Thanks! :-)

He goes by DC (explained as a likely joke when he started out as a police officer, he couldn't remember). He used to be a DCI but didn't like the politics and stepped down to DS. (less)

I really like these books - I am confused though why DS Smith was a DCI and when and indeed why he became a DS - did he retire ? If anyone can help I'd be much obliged !

Can someone explain what happened to McVie in the climax? I've reread that part several times and there is no indication. It was a good story until that part.
