I was told that if I read no other le Carre, and I had not, that this should be the one to read. I stayed the course and was rewarded. I think it is a classic in the field and some of the best English writing I have seen since Iain Banks. A very inward, critical, brutal, painful, self-analysis of the entire life of a senior spy.
