Can this be read as a stand-alone? My library only has this one book by David Eddings.

While I personally discovered Eddings with this book and loved it so much I moved on to read all their other epic fantasy novels. I do NOT recommend it as a stand-alone...

I don't think the prologue/first chapter can make much sense to anyone who asn't read the Belgariand and the Malloreon... It's a major SPOILER for the whole series because, while Belgarath the Sorcerer and Polgara the Sorceress are seen as "prequels", they take place AFTER all the other books.
They're seen as "prequels" because the narrators are telling the story of what happened before the series to the other characters from the series. (less)
