Here's the plot: Clair lives in a world not so different from our own but revolutionised by d-mat, a global teleport system that allows people to transport themselves instantaneously around the world. When she discovers that her best friend Libby has disappeared after having herself 'Improved' in transit to enhance her appearance, Clair is shocked - Improvement is highly illegal, and there are rumours of side-effects that have led to a spate of teen suicides. After enlisting the help of Jesse, a freaky Abstainer who has never d-matted in his life, and the mysterious Q who befriends Clair online, Clair goes in search of Libby and finds herself caught up in a desperate chase across the country, trying to stay one step ahead of the dangerous mastermind who has taken control of d-mat - and of Libby.
