The BBC series took many liberties with the book; the series was sexually explicit, violent and dramatic, which may have true of the Roman Empire.

However, it completely missed out on Graves's gentle irony, humour and tremendous scholarship. It's true that he wrote the Claudius books for a lark, but that brilliant mind did not let up even then. No wonder it's so popular after nearly a century of its publication.
