Spoiler? What's the tragedy that rips the family apart? I'm assuming it has something to do with a terrible thing happening to a kid, and - to my overwhelming dismay - I can't deal with a lot of details about kids suffering. So I'm straight out asking: What's the horrible event?

And where did she contract tuberculosis?...from what I understand, malnutrition can weaken the immune system so you are less likely to be able to fight it off, but she still would’ve had to have been exposed somewhere. That was never explained. I also find it hard to believe her neighbors, community members, and even her children would have allowed her to starve. I understand they didn’t want to give her money, but they could’ve had groceries delivered to her(less)
