At any point during your writing of "Mud Castles" did you ever get the feeling that the story took on a life of its own and took ownership of your thoughts? I ask this because the story flowed so smoothly almost as though it guided your pen, thereby writing itself....

Actually, I started out with only the concept of an imaginary boy growing up in my own community, with a facial deformity. I made the neighborhood take on its own life as a historically accurate story for the benefit of my children and grandchildren so that they would know what life was like for me during that era. The evolution of the story also flowed into its own life as the situations and relationships naturally evolved from one happening to another in my imagination, often based on true incidents that I had observed along the way. In that sense, I guess you can classify the book as semi-biographical. The entire process of creating that story turned out to be one of my most gratifying lifetime experiences. (less)
