I'm planning to read this book, but I've heard it's part of a large series and I'm only interested in this for the sci-fi aspect, which the other books don't have. Would I be fine just diving in to this one?

It had enough independent elements to keep me interested, but wasn't so compelling that I feel the need to read 18 more books to try and "get it."(less)
