Erikson is working on the Kharkanas Trilogy which involves the Andii and takes place long ago. Esslemont is working on the The Path to Ascendancy which is also a planned trilogy taking place during the formation of the Malazan Empire.(less)

Having read the whole Book of the Fallen saga, is it necessary to read any of the previous Esselmont novels? I don't want to get lost in ongoing subplots and the like.
