The novel, sometimes re-titled Charly after the film came out, goes more into depth of the adult themes, some which might be troubling to a young reader. Both are excellent.(less)

It's been a moment since I read it and I remember there were discussions of sexuality in the book in the sense that Charlie begins to have feelings for another character that is very unique to him. Someone might have to fact-check me there, though.
I wouldn't suggest this book to most younger people. Some older teens with high levels of maturity probably could sail through this book and understand the messages. Definitely not YA though.(less)
