Seeing the way he refers to different peoples is fascinating -- at times he's super progressive, and at other times it's clear that he views his own race as superior. His own country, too. Near the end of Voyage of the Beagle there are several pages of impassioned rhetoric about how terrible slavery is, and how hypocritical anyone defending it is. He's very proud that England has recently abolished slavery (about 25 years prior).(less)
