This book is much more like The Housekeeper and the Professor, very quiet and a very simple story. But the deep emotions behind even the most subtle gestures is what makes this story so interesting. This is about how two lonely (and quirky) people fit together. It's really beautiful. (less)

Dream chapters annoy me so much because they're usually never significant or important to the rest of the plot. Except for passages in which Sensei is telling old stories about his wife. I feel like those were real so I'm thinking perhaps those were conversations they had between sleeping/naps and to Tsukiko who was so exhausted, they just blended in with her dream. The whole island trip was kind of centered on Sensei's wife (not what Tsukiko or the reader thought) so I guess all the stories could be viewed as Sensei finally getting over his wife and letting her memory rest on the island...but I still would have preferred a non-dream chapter in favor of real action.
