I lived in Houston at the time and our church became a Red Cross shelter for almost a month.

The author is incorrect in his statement worst hurricane in US history. The worst was actually the Galveston Island flood in 1900. The entire island was wiped out along with the causeway that connects it to the mainland. There were 6000 deaths on Galveston Island and about 1800 in Katrina.(less)
