"Secret" just means what most people are unlikely to know, and that title doesn't help much to explain what the book is about. The previous title of the same book, "The Tree," actually does tell you that the book intends to be (and it is) a thorough survey of the natural history of trees.

Does anyone remember a reference to "The Prince" in the book, or maybe it was "The Little Prince"? Big difference, I know.

My copy is titled The Secret Life of Trees. Is it a previous Brit version? My current favorite book. It draws you in and shows you a wider world. Preferred it to the German book, because I love all the facts and the way he ties things together. But I had to read it with a search engine chugging alongside! Now I know what coppicing is, and why figs have that texture....
