Is the book (and the entire series) on an alternate timeline? Dr. Louise and Mrs. Murray, who are both middle-aged, talk watching the moon landing when they were young, which would put the setting in at least the 1990s, but there is nothing to otherwise indicate a setting that would have been futuristic in the 1960s/70s. Not that an alternate timeline would be out of keeping with the book's themes...
