Can someone explain, ...in pitying Alfred she [Natalie] she could hate him. Not for his weakness - the pity was for that. But for counting on her love to make him believe that his weakness was strength. Ref Page 897 The ending left me wondering, how could she "hate" him. Maybe disappointed, maybe disillusioned, maybe frustrated but "hate" that's pretty powerful for the man who supposedly was the love of her life?

It seems likely to me that it is all mixed up with self-hate for Natalie; and in the end, pity and love are mutually exclusive. If the story was about Natalie, my guess is we'd be exploring all the many avenues of self-loathing a person can choose.(less)
