It could be rats in the walls or something of that nature, or just the creaks and groans of old building, but the little men are referring to what she thought of noises in the wall as a child. I found several interesting stories to latch onto; but I imagine it would be according to what interests a person.

There were times I found the imagery and flights of magical inner life a bit prolonged because there were stories I wanted to get back to.

A couple of the stories engaged me despite the sense that they felt sort of like I was watching SkyLab fall on someone I loved while knowing there wasn't a flipping thing I could do. Some of them had a sense of vindication/redemption without being remotely upbeat(less)

Liz Same! I think the parallels between these two are definitely deliberate as well as the repeated parallels between the lady and York.
