I read an old Paris Review article where Styron says he doesn't consider himself a "Souther Writer." After reading this book, I beg to differ. Doesn't seem to get much more Southern than this. I feel the same way... on to Set This House on Fire (I bought a four pack of Styron for Kindle and this book is enough to launch me into the next one)!(less)

Why has no one made a movie of this amazing book? It seems to have all the ingredients for a classic American drama, where the female leads alone would be opportunities of a lifetime for any actress?

I’m at around page 1000 of Lie Down in Darkness. If this is supposed to be a good book I’m missing something. I just don’t find reading about every wild, twisted thought 2 mentally ill people are having. Sorry I spent my money on this package of 4 books. Hopefully the other 3 will be better. I’m trying to stick this out. Did anyone else find this the dumbest book they’ve ever read? A voracious reader
