It's striking that Hal 9000 was written 2 years after Colossus was copyrighted. Although Colossus seemed like an ego maniacal psychopath and HAL was a paranoid schizophrenic. Any chance Clarke was aware of D.F. Jones' works? Certainly his later novels returned the favor to Clarke.

"The Sentinel" (1948) and other short stories by Clarke are what 2001 was based on. The book 2001 was written concurrently with the screenplay and released in 1968 with the movie.(less)
