Greg Baxter's creative writing teacher must have taught him to show, don't tell, write so that you readers can experience the moment, and he took it to an extreme. He's good at it. Trouble is, he's a writer who doesn't live much of a life outside of cafés, apartments, and taking exploratory walks around a conglomerate European city that sometimes smacks of the former Soviet Block, sometimes not. He lives in the moment, up close, without a big picture. Like he just smoked some weed. So, I like the book, feel he's successful at doing what he set out to do, I like that he doesn't need to include chase scenes, child soldiers, and other cataclysmic events, like that he has the courage to create a lead character that is kind of "llevadero" as we say in Spanish--open to be influenced--which is common to the expat experience. But in the end, ennui is ennui, and I believe a life can have purpose, that actions have impact, and that every day counts for more than just the sum of one's thoughts and experiences. (less)
