He might have even been jealous that everyone has been getting calls and he hasn't, he feels like a failure because he did not only miss his wife's funeral but he also cannot keep his son from hoping. Throughout the book it kind of tells us and teaches us that if we don't believe in heaven then we can't get there! He is there to represent non believing out of the grief that he is feeling, he was probably most likely there to back up the lesson in the story!(less)
