Super Powereds is more on the YA side, as the characters are all college-aged, and therefore the author would seemingly have a chance (and does in Super Powereds) to explore more mature themes and settings.(less)

The characters are college aged, living in a communal dorm setting. Lots of drinking, some sex, though not explicit, and by the end of the series the characters are adults. Lots of action. As the series progresses some of the dysfunctional family dynamics are pretty intense. Bottom line is that it’s a judgement call. Having taught middle school I’d say that young readers generally prefer books about the next age-level: pre-teens like books about teenagers and teen-angers like books about college-aged, but they don’t often jump two age-levels. You might try the Arc of the Scythe series next for a very mature pre-teen - my 12 year old grandson loved books 1 & 2, book 3 is due out this fall. I was leery of it because the main characters’ jobs involve killing people, but the rationale makes sense in a fantasy world. Heavy on philosophical questions. (less)
