It's not the story elements that come with being a ship adrift at sea (death, cannibalism, starvation, etc.) but rather its complexity that can make it difficult for younger readers. While this version tones down the more graphic nature of this type of story, it is still very much present. I find that middle schoolers are probably capable of following along with the narrative this novel presents. With anything, it's probably best to for you to read it yourself before deciding on whether you find it appropriate for your audience. I hope this helps!(less)
