The Swedish title is a quote from the Swedish poet Dan Anderson (nom de plume Black Jim). The book was written and published in Sweden during Sandemose's refuge there from nazi occupied Norway.
The book was published in 1944 in Sweden, and then in 1946 in Norway with the Norwegian translated title «Det svundne er en drøm».

The full sentence of the quote from Anderson is «Det gångna är som en dröm och det närvarande förstår jag icke».
It translates into something like «What is lost is a dream and what i present I do not understand».
