Fundamentally, good novels follow the basic arc of the Hero's Journey regardless of the protagonist's gender. However, good novels also apply the same formula, but differently, to other characters. For instance, Watson should have a H. J. character arc even if the story is centered on Sherlock.

As for the synopses, I agree they often lack any purpose. Perhaps they should center on conveying the Dramatic Question &/or the Inciting Incident. That way the reader knows what they are getting into, instead of guessing.

The same thing is true for trailers to movies though. Often they are just a collection of scenes that look neat but fail to say anything about the movie other than who is in it.(less)
