But his past humiliations (and possibly his non confrontational nature) make him vulnerable to further insults till he meets a woman who instills him the courage to fight back but not before she provokes and tests him , the dog collar being one of the means(less)

I remember reading one of Louis,s short stories about a prospector who found a ledge of gold. The prospector had removed a fortune full of gold from this ledge. As the man continued working, he could hear the rumble from the ledge above. He was battling with greed when he came to his senses. He left the area safely. Just to have the mountain ledge collapse when he had been working earlier. Help me find the story?
