Three friends and myself are shortly to embark on the fairly long journey of Du Bois's "Black Reconstruction -- 1860~1880". We will likely read it in sections.

But, we almost chose to read "The Souls of Black Folk" which is MUCH shorter (comprised of 14 essays put together by DuBois, some of which had already been written, some written for this specific collection) and which some consider his seminal work, whatever that means when speaking of such a prolific writer. I would seriously check the Goodreads comments re "The Souls of Black Folk". I think it will meet your needs.
