Julie I mean, lots of jazz musicians have had animal nicknames--Bird, Willie "the Lion" Smith, Hawk for Coleman Hawkins, etc. I think it is a reference to t…moreI mean, lots of jazz musicians have had animal nicknames--Bird, Willie "the Lion" Smith, Hawk for Coleman Hawkins, etc. I think it is a reference to that, and perhaps it is also trying to say something about how some jazz musicians are seen as outsiders--and Black jazz musicians particularly being seen as "other" or even inhuman (the way Black people have been treated for centuries by white people).
